North Byron Community School
Home School Collective

The North Byron Shire Community School is a community initiative currently being implemented by a core group of parents of primary aged children located predominantly in Ocean Shores, South Golden Beach and Brunswick Heads. The initiative was inspired in the first instance by the mode of care/education offered by Lilly Pilly Community Preschool, which takes a wholistic approach to early childhood learning as parents of children attending this preschool sought a continuation of this educational structure into the primary years.  Since beginning to formalize this process further the focus group has widened to include parents and teachers outside of the initial core group from all across the area with children at various preschools and primary schools.

Timeline

The committee has already begun the process of registering a new primary school and has registered the school’s interest and begun research on the lengthy and detailed application process.  The applications close in March each year in order to be operational for the following year.  Once the application is processed it is hoped funding will be attracted to begin the process of building a new school.  The committee has had advice from other independent schools in the local area and interstate as regards budgets and scope of works.  Once the funding is secured it is expected that the school would become immediately operational from a temporary venue while a permenant site is secured and developed in two phases.  Ideal locations discussed to date include Bayside Development in Brunswick Heads or Ocean Shores south.

Proposed Total Capital Works Budget - staged in 2 phases over 5 years development based on information gathered through research is $2million + 2-3 acres of land.
